What does Lua Botanicals do?

At Lua Botanicals, we produce eco-friendly personal care products in solid form. We only work with clean, high-quality ingredients that are carefully tailored to the body's needs and, above all, with great respect for our planet and animals.

Who is behind Lua Botanicals?

Lua Botanicals is a small, sustainable company from Hamburg that we - Kelly and Cecilia - founded in 2019. We have a long, epic friendship with shared ups and downs. We lived together, traveled together, had money and then no money, were happy, sad, brave and worried together. We visited each other's home countries in South America, met our families, were pregnant together and are like sisters to each other.
The founding of Lua Botanicals is now another exciting chapter in an already adventurous friendship. We are working hard for this dream and are excited about what lies ahead.

What drives you?

We created our first shampoo out of necessity. We simply couldn't find the natural products we were looking for for ourselves and our children on the market. Conventional personal care products could never meet all the criteria of sustainability and naturalness that we wanted and we were tired of constantly having to research ingredients and production conditions.

“Why is an environmentally conscious, conscientious lifestyle so difficult?” we asked ourselves.

Then we simply started making our own shampoos. Without any frills and without hesitation. All of the shampoos we have produced since then are made by hand. We select the herbs (botanicals) ourselves, add essential oils and prepare our shampoos in our studio in Büchen. We then test the finished product on ourselves and our friends and store it in biodegradable packaging for shipping.

Our vision is to make it easier for people to access ethically correct and sustainable consumption. That's why all of our products are not only vegan, cruelty-free and zero waste, but above all affordable. Flood disasters, heat waves, tree death: Which environmental developments particularly scare you?

All environmental changes are of great importance to us. We therefore try to work as CO2 neutrally as possible. By producing most of our products on demand, we save on maintaining a warehouse, for example. There are no heating or cooling costs, transport routes remain short and the shampoos are guaranteed to be fresh.

How does Lua Botanicals work?

As good friends, we are of course equally involved in the management of the company. We both learned how to make the products, experimented together on the recipe for our soaps, attended courses on natural cosmetics, met business consultants and formed partnerships. Nevertheless, it is of course much more efficient if you share the work. That's why Cecilia mainly took over production, shipping and orders from suppliers, while Kelly focused on customer communication, marketing and accounting.

Do you have partnerships with other companies?

Yes. Our accessories (soap dishes and towels) are created in collaboration with partners. The soap dishes are made by young people with disabilities in Schwarzenbek. The towels are made by a young woman from Peru who runs a small business. Just like our soaps, they are of course produced ecologically and ethically (Fair Trade). How do you participate in environmental protection?

On the way to a more sustainable world, we not only changed our shower routine, but also reformed our entire private life. We cycle a lot and buy locally produced food, which reduces our CO2 emissions. We avoid plastic packaging, buy biodegradable diapers for our children and show them how to use natural resources respectfully.
